Major Themes in Art History Research

We will continue to screen DVD’s from the “art: 21” series and also, “How Art made the World" … both have unique approaches to history – Artist’s work discussed in both series can be divided into one of the following categories:

Major Themes in Art

• Narrative Art: Artists use art to tell stories. These images and stories
function within the context of the culture. (DEC)

• Power and authority: Artists differentiate extraordinary figures
(deities, rulers, heroes) from ordinary people. (JAN)

• Sacred Space: Architects differentiate extraordinary figures (sacred
structures, ruler's abodes, government buildings) from ordinary spaces. (FEB)

• Human body: How artists portray the human body. (MAR)

• Symbolic or allegorical images: Objects shown reflect the religious
rituals in which they are used. (APRIL)

• Portrayal of Nature: Artist's treatment of the natural world (MAY)

Each student must create a posting on their bog once A MONTH with an artist’s image and a series of facts about that image….citation information, descriptive information about the genre and technique, formal information about the elements of arts or analytical information about the principles of art, and some thoughts about artist’s intent, viewer interpretation and a judgment of the work.

Also – be on the lookout for mini-warm-ups to present to the class in December and January…what technique, art form or what art history content could you teach the group?

It could be in the format of interactive "games" such as:
Carmen Sandiego only short and less complex… 20 questions-format games…or even… Jeopardy
